![]() They'll also customize the cooling system in various ways such as replacing the factory thermal compound on the CPU and GPU(s) with the best available or adding more copper heatsinks to the heat diffusers, etc. And they can do all kinds of modifications to customize a notebook in ways that others can't (like disassembling the notebook and giving it a custom lacquer paint job). The product pages for each model notebook that Xotic PC carries has full lists of the options that are available (click their "Customize" link). Xotic PC also carries notebooks from many other manufacturers and you can limit your search to MSI only or open it up to others as well. In their forum, they have a "Which laptop should I buy" subforum here where folks can post a list of the feature (or range of features) that they want and the staff and other users will respond with suggestions. I purchased my GT80 Titan from Xotic PC in the U.S. When shopping for an MSI notebook, MSI seems to expect its authorized dealers to help buyers select a model and some of their websites provide more information-including lots of options that you will not see on MSI's own website. In fact, the GT series should be considered desktop replacements more than notebooks. So they are not the kind of notebook you'd take to school all day-their batteries wouldn't last all day and they can sometimes be noisy when their cooling kicks in. And don't expect them to be quiet when they are working hard (their fans can sound like mini tornados). Since these are gaming notebooks, don't expect long battery runtimes. You need to remember that gaming power and portability are opposite ends of a spectrum. In short, they will run out of power quicker (from the viewpoint of performance-not battery runtime) and will overheat quicker. Their cooling systems will be less powerful. So none of the MSI notebooks are designed to be away from AC power-at least not when you want high-performance gaming.Īlso, as you move down the lines into the lighter, thinner models, there will be many compromises. Even still, they all employ a hybrid power system where both the AC/DC adapter and internal Li-ion battery are used to provide enough current to run the CPU and GPU of each model to its full power (as limited by the notebook design). And the GT80 and GT80S Titans have dual GPUs in SLI, requiring even more size, cooling and power.Īs you move down through the other lines, they progress toward lighter, thinner notebooks where portability is favored instead of raw gaming power. As such they are big and heavy because they have the biggest power supplies and cooling systems. The GT series is intended to provide the best gaming performance for a notebook. ![]() If you follow the lines from top to bottom, the GT are the top-tier with the GT80 and GT80S Titans at the very top and the GT72 and GT72S Dominators next behind them. ![]() When you click on one and view the product information page for it, you'll see a "Specification" link that will take you to a webpage with the full specifications. This is usually the starting point for many shoppers looking for information. But, once you pick a model line and see lots of models in that line, you should see the GPU listed for each. As you've noticed, there isn't much help for beginners with respect for the primary intent for the different model lines. Therefore, their website is not set up for sales. Perhaps the first thing you need to know is that MSI does NOT sell direct to the public. Maybe their laptops are just as bad as their website. Seriously do they really expect people to buy anything off that website? Did they get monkeys to design it. This useless website is like selling tomatoes and oranges on display at the supermarket - full of stupid pictures and all the details hidden, I want to be able to choose or to see specs, like screen size, FHD or QHD or 4K or whatever, TN or IPS panel, touch or not, CPU choices, RAM choices, disks etc - where is all that? ![]() The most fundamental and basic attribute of a laptop is the screen size. OK, so we take a guess that the top one, GT, must be the best, so we click on GT to see what there is - and we get another page full of laptop pictures with weird model names, but not even one hint of the most basic information like screen size damn it. GS, GE, GL, G-my-arse" - Seriously how am I supposed to know what these model numbers mean? This is so damn irritatingly useless. I am looking for an upgrade to my 17" gaming laptop, and I landed on the MSI website, and I click on "products" and then "notebooks" and I see "GT.
